Explore & Discover Halifax

Welcome to our OCEANS Conference 2024 Host Region!

As Canada’s Ocean City, Halifax offers ocean innovators and companies from around the world access to a deep and diverse ecosystem of customers, partners, and suppliers.

Located on North America’s East Coast, Halifax is the capital city of Nova Scotia (pop. 480,600) and the educational, cultural, and economic hub of Atlantic Canada. Halifax is a prime location for moving goods in and out of North America, travelling to and from international destinations, and delivering services across time zones. On top of that, the city offers an excellent east coast lifestyle that attracts top talent from around the world.

With a growing and increasingly diverse economy, booming local tech community, and universities and colleges driving R&D, Halifax is supporting the growth and success of over 500 ocean sector companies – including the most ocean tech startups in Canada. Nova Scotia’s ocean economy generates approximately $6 billion annually (13.5% of the province’s GDP). Areas of expertise include marine transportation, marine defence and security, ocean science and observation, acoustics, sensors and instruments, and offshore and coastal energy.

Halifax is a global centre for marine R&D and innovation with ocean-technology accounting for approximately one third of total R&D among Nova Scotia businesses. Dalhousie University is a world leader in ocean research and education, while The Bedford Institute of Oceanography is Canada’s largest ocean research centre with over 600 scientists, engineers, and technicians.

The Centre for Ocean Ventures and Entrepreneurship (COVE) brings together an expansive network of innovators, collaborators, researchers and investors that are propelling the development and growth of Canada’s marine technology sector. Halifax is also a key partner in Canada’s Ocean Supercluster, an industry-led transformative cluster model that drives cross-sectoral collaboration, accelerates innovation, and grows Canada’s ocean economy in a way that has never been done before.

Major players in Canada’s ocean economy are located in Halifax including Irving Shipbuilding – the most modern shipbuilder in North America currently building Canada’s next generation of combat vessels – Lockhead Martin, MetOcean, and Kraken.

Halifax has a strong Maritime Naval history and presence. The city is home to Maritime Forces Atlantic, the naval branch of the Canadian Forces, which is a key contributor to marine defence and security and a major employer and economic driver. CFB Halifax is the largest military base in Canada serving a workforce of approximately 7,500 military and 2,300.

Testimonial:There are so many opportunities in Halifax. A few notable ones would be the National Shipbuilding Strategy, Marine Renewables Projects, and Canada’s Ocean Supercluster.  All showcase the immense possibility for long-term, sustainable business here.” – Andrew Palmer, General Manager, MacArtney Underwater Technology
